Above: Public open space to the front of the proposed building on the Broadway
Whilst the proposed area of public open space is now smaller in size than previously proposed, its relocation to the front of the site has been designed to enhance the character of The Broadway. By setting back the central element of the proposed building, a piazza-style landscaped open space has been created adjacent to the YMCA café and restaurant/retail space at ground floor, creating a new destination to the east of Wimbledon Town Centre.
The design of these commercial units represents a modern interpretation of a Victorian shopping parade, with a set back soffit spanning ground and first floors to create a unique experience for people walking under the proposed buildings.
The space is also proposed to contain a soft landscaped area to the front with birch trees, which are known to be good at filtering out pollution (Particulate Matter). A water fountain will also be provided within the public space so that people can have a drink or refill water bottles.
The open space will be flexible and could be used for a variety of activities, including:
All the potential uses of the adaptable space would attract more visitors to this part of The Broadway and enhance the streetscape. If you have any other suggestions for the space, please do let us know.
Further, addressing previous concerns around anti-social behaviour on-site, this newly designed public open space will be professionally managed 24 hours a day and will benefit from CCTV, as well as natural surveillance from the homes above, which are also managed by a 24 hour concierge.
