Public realm options

The proposal includes a substantial amount of public space. We would like it to be inviting for everyone to access and enjoy. The space has an urban character and would act as a buffer to the residential area and the busy Broadway. It will be closed overnight to prevent antisocial behaviour.

The exact design of the public realm is yet to be finalised, and below we have set out two options where, in particular, we are seeking your feedback.

Option 1:

Flexible open space

This multi-functional space would allow for several different uses:

During the tennis championship, screening of matches could be held.

A weekly farmer’s market could be established to use the space.

Community and charity events could be held in the space, as well as local sport events.

All the potential uses of the adaptable space would attract more visitors to this part of The Broadway and enhance the streetscape.

Option 2:

Landscaped open space

This modelled, green space would provide a pocket park away from the bustle of The Broadway.

The space would attract:

Members of the public looking for somewhere to stroll or relax.

Gym users wishing to work out in the open air.

Nearby workers desiring to eat outside.

Freelancers choosing to work in the outdoors.

Below: Option 2 - Landscaped open space

Again, all the potential uses of a landscaped, green space would improve this part of The Broadway, by creating a destination in Wimbledon town centre and encouraging more footfall.
